Biography
Vinton Gray Cerf was born June 23, 1943 in New Haven, Connecticut. He earned his bachelor's in mathematics from Stanford in 1965, then his PhD in computer science from UCLA in 1972. At UCLA he worked under Leonard Kleinrock — the man who sent the first message over ARPANET — and became deeply embedded in the early internet research community. After UCLA he worked at Stanford, then joined DARPA, where he co-invented the foundational technology that makes the internet possible.
In 1973, working with Bob Kahn at DARPA, Cerf designed the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) — the universal language that allows any computer, anywhere in the world, to communicate with any other. The core insight was elegant: define a common protocol for packet-switched communication, and the network becomes infinitely extensible. No single node controls it. Any device can join. The architecture chose openness by design, and that choice made the internet the most transformative technology in human history. Cerf went on to co-found ICANN, shape internet governance at the UN, and serve as Google's Chief Internet Evangelist since 2005, where he advocates for internet access as a human right.
