Biography

Willard Reed Hastings Jr. was born in 1960 in Boston. He studied mathematics at Bowdoin College, joined the Peace Corps in Swaziland teaching math, then earned a master's in computer science from Stanford. His first company, Pure Atria Software, was acquired by Rational Software for $750M in 1997. The legend goes that Hastings co-founded Netflix after paying a $40 late fee on Apollo 13 at Blockbuster. He has since admitted the story is apocryphal — but it became canon because it was a perfect encapsulation of the insight: late fees were an extraction mechanism that punished customers, and any business built on that mechanism deserved to be disrupted.

Netflix launched in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail service. By 2002, when it IPO'd, Blockbuster had 9,000 stores and $6B in revenue. Hastings offered to sell Netflix to Blockbuster for $50M in 2000. Blockbuster's executives reportedly laughed. By 2010, Blockbuster was bankrupt. By 2023, Netflix had 238M subscribers in 190 countries, had won 112 Academy Awards, and was worth $150B. The reversal took 13 years.

Two strategic pivots defined his tenure. In 2007, Netflix launched streaming — pivoting away from the very product that had made it successful. In 2012, Netflix began producing original content with House of Cards, becoming a studio. Both pivots required cannibalizing existing revenue streams before competitors could do it. Hastings stepped back from CEO to executive chairman in 2023.

Core Philosophy

Freedom and responsibility. The Netflix Culture Deck, co-created with Patty McCord, rejected the premise that adults need rules to behave well. Instead: hire extraordinary people, tell them what you need to achieve, and trust them to figure out how. No vacation policy. No expense policy. No approval layers. Just: act in Netflix's best interest. The document was called "the most important document ever to come out of Silicon Valley" by Sheryl Sandberg.

Radical candor and keeper test. Hastings institutionalized a question every manager at Netflix must ask themselves about every direct report: "If this person told me they were leaving for a new job, would I fight hard to keep them?" If the answer is no, they should be let go now — with generous severance. This "keeper test" replaced performance improvement plans and annual reviews with a constant, honest accounting of team quality.
